Now that the ice is off the area lakes, the crappies will be biting soon. If you are thinking of taking the boat out of storage, you many want to look at your insurance program before getting out to the landing. While it is true that many homeowners insurance policies will cover physical damage to boats if properly endorsed, the standard homeowners policy probably only provides $500 on watercraft, furnishings, equipment and outboard motors. Certainly not enough to replace the new bass boat with the 200hp motor, trolling motors, depth finders and such.
We suggest purchasing a stand alone watercraft insurance policy for all but the smallest of boats. Policies are normally very reasonably priced and can be purchased from a number of great companies. The watercraft policies can provide you with replacement coverage for your boat, motor, trailer and equipment, as well as protect you in the unfortunate event of a liability loss where you are responsible for damage to property or injury to others. Specialized coverages such as wreck removal, pollution liability and medical expense payments can be part of the boat policy that you may not be able to get from your home insurance policy.
